Help in the time of Corona

It is the spring of the year 2020 and the Corona pandemic is sweeping across the globe. What started in a faraway city in China has spread at breakneck speed to every part of the world. The first European country hit by the pandemic was Italy. As it was the first, there was almost no time to prepare. The Italian people and health system came under great distress before they really realised what was happening...

Joachim holding the donation cheque

Joachim Schoser has very close business links with Italy. His very business is the import of food products from Italy, especially from Northern Italy were the pandemic struck hardest. In view of great strain on the population, he therefore decided to take action and to organise a donation for Ospedali Santa Croce in the Italian region of Piemont. The customers of Joachim's shop Via del Gusto donated in total €10,000 to the three hospitals in Monacalieri, Maggiore di Chieri and San Lorenzo di Carmagnola that form the Ospitali Santa Croce group.
"We know our suppliers personally. Often, they are small family businesses with only two or three employees", explains Joachim. "It became very quickly obvious that the hospitals would not be able to manage the situation and needed support. By helping the hospitals, the action would benefit all inhabitants of the region. We are very, very proud of our customers who together have donated such a large amount", concludes Joachim.

Going green

On 5 September 2010, Donauwörth hosted the 16th edition of its 'eco-market'. The market is an annual event and offers a wide range of organic food and other green products mostly of local origin.

For a number of years, Joachim Schoser has been part of the team organising the eco-market. He represents 'City Initiative Donauwörth' (CID), an association of local businesses and the municipality supporting diverse events in the city. From 2006 to 2008, Joachim promoted the event also directly on the myheimat blog.

The eco-market concept appears to fit nicely with Joachim's own business Via del Gusto which imports food products from Italy made by small, traditional producers.

In case you missed it, the next and 17th edition of Donauwörth's eco-market is scheduled to take place on 4 September 2011 and Joachim will, once more, be in charge.

Entrepreneurial spirit

To earn a living Schosers seem to like to run their own business. In some cases, the business has been run by several Schoser generations.
Rainer Schoser owns and manages a ropeyard in Burladingen founded by his grand-father Eugen Schoser back in 1932. What, at first sight, looks like a rather old-fashioned business is in fact a pretty up-to-date economic activity since steel ropes and related technology are essentiel tools in particular in the building industry.
Also in Burladingen, Willi Schoser runs a company providing agricultural services, in particular the cutting and threshing of corn, to farmers (Lohnmähdrescherei).

Staying in the industrious area of the Swabian Alb, there is also the Schoser business with probably the longest history. In Trochtelfingen, the Schoser ’fashion house’ has a history of over 130 years. Johannes Schoser used to weave cloth when, in 1877, he opened his own shop to trade and sell clothes. Today, the business still exists. It is run in the fourth generation by Bernhard Schoser and is bigger than ever before.

More recent is Achim Schoser’s business AS Telekommunikation in Ohmden. Since 1991, Achim designs and installs telecom systems to respond to the individual needs of small enterprises and liberal professions.
Haus Schmitz
In Karlsruhe, Schosers run a home for elderly people called Haus Schmitz. Together with his wife Ingrid, who inherited the home from her parents, Joachim Schoser is responsible for the well-being of about 250 elderly taken care of by 180 employees. Their son Mathias has also become part of the management team.

Across the Atlantic, Schosers are equally enterpreneurial. In Durango, Colorado, Tom Schoser owns and runs an auto repair shop. He has been in business since 1998 and may also have a used car on offer if you pass by 600, East 4th Avenue.
In San Diego, California, Michelle Schoser has worked as a free lance makeup artist and hair stylist. She looks back at a couple of years of experience and did already some work for different TV series.
